Why is Soccer Not as Popular in the United States?
The world’s favorite sport keeps struggling to gain traction in the United States.
The 2022 World Cup began this week in Qatar. While this year’s event is surrounded by controversy over the choice of the host country, many sports fans in the United States are barely aware of the event.
Much like the Summer Olympics, the World Cup is the only time many sports fans in the United States think about soccer. There will be plenty of “USA” chants as fans hope we will bring home a championship (it is unlikely, but we can still hope).
While the women’s soccer team has had great success, men’s soccer has struggled. In recent years, there was even some controversy over the fact the more successful women’s team makes less money than their male counterparts. But that is a topic for another article.
So, why isn’t soccer as popular in the United States as other sports? Most countries around the world cannot get enough of the sport. And considering how popular it is with our neighbors to the north and south, it is a little surprising it is not as popular. We have many professional soccer clubs around the country, and they have plenty of supporters. But, Americans do not get as excited about the World Cup as they do about the Super Bowl or World…
