Travel Tips I Have Learned As A Teacher

Group travel is fun, but here are some things to keep in mind for both adults and students.

I am a middle school history teacher. I also work with a company that provides travel opportunities for students. I started working with them in 2018 and have taken students on two international trips.

Friends and colleagues always question my mental health whenever I get ready to make one of these trips. Not only do I deal with middle schoolers for nine months out of the year, but I voluntarily take a group of them out of the country where they will be with me the whole time? Am I crazy?

Well, maybe a little. I am a middle school teacher, after all.

In reality, it is a fun and rewarding experience. The students learn much about other cultures while enjoying a possibly once-in-a-lifetime experience. My favorite thing a kid tells me when we are winding down a trip is not, “If I ever come here again,” but “When I come here again.”

The kids that would be troublemakers don’t go on trips. They know I can bring the hammer down when I need to. One of my students told the others, “Don’t make him use the MR. HOWARD voice.”
