Clown in a Cornfield: An Homage to Slasher Films that Doesn’t Take Itself Too Seriously
I’m not a fan of clowns. If I see one in real life, I try to steer clear of them. Perhaps it is the whole Pennywise or John Wayne Gacy thing. However, if it is in a movie, I can usually handle it. Therefore, my wife and I decided to watch Clown in a Cornfield.
The film takes place in the small town of Kettle Springs, Missouri. The town’s claim to fame is the Baypen Corn Syrup factory, with the clownish mascot, Frendo. The town fell on hard times after a mysterious fire caused the closing of the factory.
Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas) arrives in town with her father, Glenn (Aaron Abrams), after he takes the job as the town’s new doctor. She soon befriends a group of the town’s misfits: Cole (Carson McCormick), Janet (Cassandra Potenza), Ronnie (Verity Marks), Tucker (Ayo Solanke), and Matt (Alexandre Martin Deakin).
The group is seen as troublemakers by the town’s adults. Cole reveals that they make viral horror videos starring Frendo and that they were blamed for the fire that burnt down the factory. Though Glenn urges Quinn not to associate with the group, she sneaks out to join a Founder’s Day field party.
