A replica of the ark in Ethiopia/travelblog.org

The Ark of the Covenant has fascinated historians for thousands of years. According to the Hebrew Bible, the ark was a wooden, gold encased box that contained the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments inscribed on them. The New Testament Book of Hebrews also included Aaron’s (the brother of Moses) rod and a pot of manna (the bread from heaven that kept the Hebrews alive in the Exodus).

This artifact was housed in the center of the Temple of Jerusalem and was one of the holiest artifacts for the ancient Hebrews. …

Over three hundred African-Americans were murdered by a white mob one hundred years ago during Memorial Day weekend. Between May 31 and June 1, 1921, a white mob burned the Tulsa, Oklahoma, Greenwood community to the ground. The event would be covered up and forgotten until recent years.

While the state of Oklahoma began an investigation into the incident in 1996 (they completed the study in 2001) and concluded that the city of Tulsa had conspired with the mob and worked to cover up the incident, a park was dedicated to the victims in 2010.

While more significant knowledge of…

I teach ancient world history to 6th graders. Every year we start with explaining the B.C./A.D. (or BCE/CE, which is catching on more) time split. Many kids know that BC stands for “Before Christ,” but it is the AD part that always gets them.

The most common answer is “After Death,” as in after Christ’s death. While that would be the obvious answer, that is not what it means. I then give the kids a brief Latin lesson. AD stands for Anno Domini, or “Year of Our Lord”.

We then usually move on to how the religious connotations of BC…

Many Wrestling Fans Missing Out on Wrestlemania Due to Peacock Merger

Wrestlemania 37 kicked off last night. The two-night event (which appears to be WWE’s plan in the future, as they did the same last year) promises to showcase the best the WWE has to offer. It is also one of the first sporting events to have a live crowd since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Tampa Bay crowd was ready, despite the rain and weather alerts that caused some delays for the events. Many fans watched at home on several streaming platforms.

However, a large portion of U.S. fans missed…

History is full of great generals, rulers, and warriors who change the world. People like Napoleon, Ghengis Khan, Alexander the Great, and Joan of Arc led nations and armies that changed history.

And then there are stories of warriors that are just insane pieces for trivia. Individuals who may not have changed the world but stand out for their acts of bravery, heroics, or sheer insanity. One of those figures was Galvarino.

Not much is known about Galvarino’s early life. He was born sometime in the mid-1500s in the land of the Mapuche people. These people lived in parts of…

A year ago, I was saying goodbye to my students for what we thought would be a couple of weeks before returning. A fourteen-day break right before Spring Break didn’t sound too bad for most of us, though I was dreading trying to catch up on my Social Studies lessons. We had just finished learning about the Silk Road and were going to start learning about India.

I said bye to my students, some of them with genuine worry about what the virus would do. If you believe some people, the virus would be worse than the 1918 pandemic and…

The Shang Dynasty ruled China during the 2nd million BCE, following the Xia Dynasty, and before the Zhou Dynasty. They are the earliest dynasty supported by archeological evidence in China, and their greatest ruler was Wu Ding, who ruled from 1324–1266 BCE. He made alliances with neighboring tribes by marrying women from each of these tribes. His favorite was a woman named Fu Hao.

Little is known about Fu Hao, or sometimes Lady Hao, in the historical record. It was not until her tomb was discovered at Yinxu in 1976. The tomb was found intact with various artifacts and inscriptions…

Pete Browning was one of the early greats of American Baseball and would lend his nickname to the Louisville Slugger Baseball bat.

Have you ever wondered how the Louisville Slugger baseball bat got its name? It is the nickname of famous 19th-century hitter and Louisville native Pete Browning. Browning played for the Louisville Eclipse and Colonels baseball clubs and is considered one of his day’s best batters. He is also known for beginning the practice of players having custom made bats.

Browning was born in 1861 as the youngest of eight children. When his father was killed in a cyclone when he was 13, Browning cared for his mother and resided in the family home until he died. He began his baseball…

As Super Bowl LV kicks off this evening, many around the country and the world will tune in to see the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While there will be many who will cheer on one team or the other, some will be watching just for the commercials.

Since the inception of the Super Bowl, companies have seen the value of advertising their brand on one of the year's biggest stages. While in the beginning, companies would pay a few hundred thousand dollars for a 30-second spot, today, a 30-second ad costs millions of dollars.

For that…
