31 for 31 Part 9: The Babysitter Killer Bee
A sequel that is just as entertaining as the original
Horror sequels can be very tricky. A good sequel builds on the previous story while making something new and entertaining. The best sequels continue the story, while others try to be different and fall short of the mark. If we look at the numerous sequels and remakes of Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street, sequels can be hit and miss.
The Babysitter: Killer Queen does a great job building off the previous film. The film picks up two years after the original movie, with Cole now a junior in high school. No one believes his version of the events (his babysitter being the leader of a satanic cult and several murders occurring as the mess was mysteriously cleaned up). Instead, he is put on medication and is set to go to a psychiatric academy.
We find out he never went any further with his crush, Melanie, and instead is just good friends with her. We are also introduced to a new character, Pheobe (Jenna Ortega), a troubled teen who just transferred to their school. Melanie tells Cole to ditch school with some other friends and spend the weekend at the lake. However, things are different from what they seem.
Melanie and her friends are part of the same cult as the original film, and the previous villains have been resurrected…
