31 for 31 part 7: The Babysitter
A fun horror-comedy that you might have slept on
This 2017 horror-comedy is available on Netflix. The film follows high school loser Cole (Judah Lewis), who has a crush on the girl across the street and is constantly bullied by his peers. His parents are patient with his timid nature, which is a nice change of pace for films that sometimes portray such family dynamics.
Cole’s one solace is his babysitter, Bee (Samara Weaving), a beautiful young woman who looks out for Cole. When his parents decide to have a romantic weekend away, Bee and Cole have a weekend plan of dance parties and pizza ahead.
Events take a turn when Cole discovers that Bee has invited some friends over after he goes to bed. His crush, Melanie, talks him into spying on them to see what mischief they are getting into.
While Cole thinks that he will spy on some teenage sexual content, he instead finds Bee and her friends killing another person as a human sacrifice. He then has to work to escape the group in exciting ways.
There are a few gruesome deaths in the film, but there is also a lot of dark humor. The cast is excellent, and it is a movie that I wish had been on my radar years ago. A sequel was released in 2020, so watch out for my summary of that film soon.
