31 for 31 part 5: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
A sequel that didn’t need to be made
In 1974, the world was introduced to Leatherface, the chainsaw-wielding cannibal. Leatherface got the name for his habit of wearing his victims' faces as a mask. The original movie is terrifying and is considered one of the first slasher movies. It was also known for keeping a lot of the gore and violence off-camera, allowing the audience to imagine what horrors Leatherface is doing.
However, the 2022 Netflix sequel leaves little to the imagination. My wife does not like the films, but I have seen the original and several sequels and remakes. As the years have gone by, the films have upped the gore and violence, but there is still an element of good characters and the right amount of dark humor.
So when my wife went to bed early, I decided to spend about an hour and a half to see if this movie was as bad as some people have said. And yes, it is terrible. It takes shots at the social media-obsessed 20-somethings who are ready to “change the world.” I usually have at least one or two characters that I root for to survive; these characters I don’t care if they made it or not.
