31 for 31 Part 31: Halloween
John Carpenter’s Halloween is a horror classic. It introduced many to the great Jamie Lee Curtis and the iconic killer Micheal Myers. Since then, it has spawned a series of equals and remakes (some better than others). The film has become a tradtion in my household, with my wife and I watching the film before waiting for our first trick-or-treaters to arrive.
The film follows babysitter Laurie as she begins to settle in for a Halloween night of babysitting. What she does not know is she being stalked by killer Micheal Myers, who had killed his sister and her boyfriend years before.
That night Micheal kills several of Laurie’s friends while Dr. Loomis tries to get to town and save the neighborhood from Micheal’s rampage. Miceal finally gets to Laurie, and she is able to fight off Micheal who appears to fall to his death. However, we soon discover that his body is gone.
The orignal film was meant to be a stand alone film. Carpenter then invisionsed Halloween as being an anthology, with different stories with each installment. However, Micheal Myers was so popular and that fans wanted more of him; and the studio saw dollar signs.
As the years have gone on, there have been several sequals, with some confusing the mythos of the orignal and making the stories a bit hard to follow. The studio tried to correct these sins with a recent trilogy of films starting 2018. While they may not have been the most satisfying ending to some fans, it did finally close the ciricle and got rid of some of the murkier plot points.
