There is something to be said for independent movies. They are outside the studio system, allowing filmmakers much more freedom in their work. There are some great independent films, especially horror movies. There is also something to be said for horror movies that push the envelope on what can be shown on screen.

Some envelope-pushing films gain a lot of acclaim from fans and critics, and others gain a bit of a cult following. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, for instance, had a decent plot to accompany the violence and gore. It sparked a franchise and several remakes.

The early 2000s saw a boom in what was called torture porn. These filmmakers relished in the violence and putting the characters in horrible situations. Films like Hostel pushed what audiences would stomach. However, many argue that films such as Saw, at least the first couple, had a message and a reason for the violence.

Then there is 2016’s Terrifier. Directed by Damien Leone, the film follows Tara (Jenna Kenall) and Dawn (Catherine Cocoran) as they attempt to find a ride home after a night of celebrating Halloween. They are soon stalked by the silent and sinister Art the Clown (David Howard Thorton). Tara calls her sister, Victoria (Samantha Scaffidi), to meet them after they find their car tires are slashed.
